A Raksha mask is a part of a costume that Sri Lankans use in many cultural dances and festivities. Raksha means ʺdemonʺ while they are the final aspect of the Kolam ritual that is connected to our culture. Performed as a tribute to the Rakshasas, a race that was seen ruling ancient Sri Lanka, it usually assumed 24 different forms which has now minimized to a very few.
The Maru Raksha which is the mask of the Demon of Death is one of the few that are used today in these rituals which are intended to ward off evil. According to folklore and beliefs, this demon will decide on the life and death of an individual. It is also believed that by invoking blessings on the Maru Raksha through a special dance ritual, death could be delayed. These masks are painted in vibrant colours while they have protruding tongues and bulging eyes depicting various demons.
