Abhutha Sanniya Mask - Height 23cm

The Abhutha Sanniya Mask is a traditional Sri Lankan ritual mask associated with the Sanni Yakuma, an ancient healing ceremony believed to exorcise demons causing specific illnesses. Abhutha Sanniya is linked to delusional behavior, hallucinations, and irrational thoughts—conditions that were historically interpreted as being influenced by supernatural forces. Used in performance rituals, the mask is believed to help dispel the negative energy responsible for mental disturbances and restore balance to the afflicted person.

As seen in the image, the mask is hand-carved from Kaduru wood and painted with vivid detailing. The wide, bulging eyes outlined in red, prominent nose, and tightly drawn mouth with yellowed teeth evoke a sense of fear and confusion—emphasizing the psychological imbalance the mask represents. Deep grooves along the face add intensity to its expression, portraying emotional turmoil and disarray. Each mask is handcrafted and hand-painted by skilled artisans, making every piece unique and reflective of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
