The bulging eyes and protruding tongue is meant to symbolize the various types of demons.
These Raksha masks are also the final aspect of the Kolam Ritual and they are used as a form of tribute to the Rakshasas, a race that once ruled ancient Sri Lanka. It is also believed that the possession of these masks will attract good fortune while warding off the bad. The masks are made of kaduru wood while the paint is acrylic.
